If you’re new to clay shooting or looking to expand your skills, you may have heard of skeet shooting, trap shooting, and sporting clays—but what exactly are they, and how do they differ?
At Etowah Valley Sporting Clays, we offer all three disciplines, making us the perfect place to experience each style firsthand. Let’s break them down!
Skeet Shooting: Fast-Paced & Circular Action
Best for: Improving reaction time and consistency
Skeet shooting involves two clay target machines (or “houses”) positioned at opposite ends of a semi-circular field. Targets cross in front of shooters at varying angles, requiring quick reflexes and precision. Shooters move through several challenging and exciting stations, getting different target presentations at each. Skeet is ideal for those looking to sharpen their accuracy and timing.

Trap Shooting: Straight & Long-Distance Focus
Best for: Beginners and those honing long-range accuracy
Trap shooting uses a single target machine located in front of the shooter, throwing clays away at varying angles. Shooters rotate through five stations, with each shot coming from a different position. This sport mimics bird hunting and is great for those looking to improve their ability to track moving targets over long distances.
💡 Did you know? Trap shooting is the oldest of the three disciplines and is even an Olympic sport!
Sporting Clays: The Ultimate Challenge
Best for: Hunters, advanced shooters, and those looking for variety
Often called “golf with a shotgun,” sporting clays is the most dynamic and unpredictable of the three disciplines. Courses feature multiple shooting stations set in natural terrain, each offering a unique challenge. Targets may bounce, curve, or even simulate the flight of birds or rabbits. Sporting clays is a fun, challenging experience perfect for all skill levels.
