At Etowah Valley Sporting Clays, we welcome visitors from all walks of life. Folks come to visit to sharpen their aim, connect with friends, or simply enjoy a day outdoors. One of the most common areas of curiosity we hear about? Skeet shooting.
This blog breaks down the frequently asked questions we receive, offering insight into what skeet shooting is, what gear you need, and how to get started, especially if you’re new to the sport.
What Is Skeet Shooting Exactly?
Skeet shooting is a shotgun sport designed to simulate bird hunting, minus the feathers. Shooters aim at 4 5/16-inch clay targets that are flung into the air from two separate points, known as the high house and the low house, with the goal of breaking them mid-flight.
Each target flies in a specific arc, usually traveling up to 60 yards, challenging the shooter’s precision, timing, and technique.
If you’ve ever wanted to improve your wingshooting skills or just want a new outdoor challenge, skeet shooting is a fantastic option.
Is Skeet Shooting a Good Sport for Kids?
Yes—with the right supervision and maturity level. There’s no official minimum age to start skeet shooting, but we always recommend evaluating the child’s:
- Physical ability (can they safely and comfortably handle a shotgun?)
- Maturity level (can they follow instructions and safety rules?)
- Interest in the sport
At Etowah Valley Sporting Clays, safety is our number one priority. That’s why we encourage all beginners and youth shooters to work with one of our experienced instructors. This ensures they learn proper habits, handling, and respect for firearms from day one.
What Kind of Equipment Should I Use for Skeet Shooting?
The shotgun is the star of the show here. While most shotguns can technically be used for skeet, we recommend using 12-gauge or 20-gauge over-under or semi-automatic shotguns, depending on comfort and purpose.
Factors to consider:
- Gun size & fit: A well-fitted shotgun will drastically improve comfort and performance.
- Recoil sensitivity: Younger or smaller shooters may prefer lighter options.
- Goals: Are you just starting out, looking to compete, or simply want a fun hobby?
Not ready to invest in a shotgun just yet? No problem. At Etowah Valley, we offer:
- Shotgun rentals
- Ammunition and gear for purchase
- Eye and ear protection equipment
- Golf cart rentals for an easier experience between stations
