7 Things to Know Before Your First Tournament at Etowah Valley

Stepping into your first sporting clays tournament is exciting, but it can also feel intimidating if you’re not sure what to expect. At Etowah Valley Sporting Clays, we’ve seen beginners grow into seasoned competitors, and it all starts with preparation and the right mindset.

➡️ If you’re thinking about joining one of our upcoming tournaments in North Georgia, here are seven key things to know before you step onto the course.

1. It’s About Fun First

While tournaments bring out a competitive spirit, they’re built on camaraderie and connection. Most participants are here to enjoy the outdoors, challenge themselves, and share the experience with friends. Don’t stress about perfection. Focus on enjoying the process.

2. Know the Courses and Levels

EVSC offers four courses with varying levels of difficulty:

  • 🟢 Green Course: Best for beginners, with approachable angles and slower targets.

  • 🔵 Blue Course: Balanced, great for sharpening your skills.

  • 🔴 Red Course: Intermediate level with more technical challenges.

  • ⚪ White Course: Tournament-ready, built for long-distance precision and advanced competitors.

When registering for a tournament, check the course level so you know what to expect.

3. Bring (or Rent) the Right Gear

You don’t need to own gear to compete. At EVSC, we offer:

  • Shotgun rentals

  • Target load ammo (sizes 7.5, 8, or 9 only)

  • Eye and ear protection

  • Golf carts and shell pouches

Pack comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes, and bring a cooler of water or sports drinks (no alcohol while on the courses).

4. Safety is Always First

Tournaments follow the same rules as any day on the course:

  • Eye and ear protection required.

  • No loaded firearms outside designated stations.

  • Maximum of two shells loaded at a time.

  • Always keep your barrel pointed downrange.

Our instructors and staff will be on-site to help ensure safety throughout the event.

5. Learn the Etiquette

Tournament etiquette is simple but important:

  • Don’t load until it’s your turn.

  • Be respectful of other participants’ focus.

  • Keep the pace moving but don’t rush others.

  • Cheer on your fellow participants, it’s part of the fun.

6. Practice Ahead of Time

If it’s your first competition, consider booking a lesson with one of our instructors: Tim, Mike, Ron, or George. They’ll help refine your stance, focus, and timing so you feel more confident on the big day.

7. Plan for the Full Experience

Tournaments at EVSC are more than just the competition, they’re events. Many participants stick around after their rounds to enjoy the lodge, chat with friends, or grab a bite under the pavilion. Bring your family or friends along for the day; it’s a great way to celebrate together.
