Beginner’s Guide to Sporting Clays: What to Know Before You Go

If you’ve ever wanted to try clay shooting but weren’t sure where to start, you’re in the right place. At Etowah Valley Sporting Clays, we welcome shooters of all experience levels, and that includes complete beginners.

Maybe you’re looking for a new hobby, planning a fun day out with friends or family, or just curious about what clay shooting is all about. Here’s everything you need to know before your first visit to our North Georgia clay shooting range, along with helpful tips, gear recommendations, and answers to common questions to make your first experience smooth, safe, and unforgettable.

What Is Sporting Clays?

Think of sporting clays as “golf with a shotgun.” Rather than aiming at a static target, you move from station to station across beautifully designed outdoor courses, where clay targets are launched to simulate the flight patterns of game birds or rabbits. Each station offers a different challenge, making it both fun and engaging for newcomers and seasoned shooters alike.

Why Etowah Valley Sporting Clays?
Located in Dawsonville, Georgia, Etowah Valley is a top-rated destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to enjoy scenic views, peaceful surroundings, and the thrill of the sport.

Here’s why Etowah Valley Sporting Clays is a great spot for first-timers:

  1. Four unique courses, including our Green Course, tailored for beginners.
  2. Seasoned instructors available for one-on-one lessons.
  3. On-site rentals so you don’t need to bring anything but yourself and closed-toe shoes.
  4. A warm and welcoming lodge, friendly staff, and easy-to-follow safety protocols.

Which Course Should I Start With?

We recommend starting on our Green Course. It’s designed with beginners in mind, offering moderate target speeds and approachable angles that help build confidence without overwhelming you.

As you get comfortable, you can graduate to:

  • Blue Course – for intermediate and recreational shooters.
  • Red Course – offers more technical target presentations.
  • White Course – long-distance and pro-level target shots for advanced skill sets.

What Should I Wear to Go Clay Shooting?

Dress for comfort and mobility. Here’s a quick checklist:

  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes (you’ll be walking on gravel and grass).
  • A brimmed hat or baseball cap to block the sun.
  • Weather-appropriate clothes: layers are ideal in changing North Georgia weather.
  • Optional but helpful: A padded shooting vest or shell pouch to carry ammo.

What Safety Gear Do I Need?

Safety is our number one priority. We provide ear and eye protection with rentals, but you can also bring your own.

🔹 Eye Protection: Clear or tinted safety glasses protect against flying debris.
🔹 Ear Protection: Foam earplugs or over-the-ear muffs are essential. Gunshots can reach up to 140 decibels, which can cause permanent hearing damage without protection.

What Kind of Ammo Should I Use?

Only target loads are permitted on our property. These include shot sizes 7.5, 8, or 9. These pellets are smaller and ideal for shooting clays safely.

⚠️ Note: Game loads (sizes 6, 5, 4, 3, 2) and any rifles or handguns are not allowed on the property.

What if I Don’t Own a Shotgun?

No worries! We offer gun rentals on-site. Our staff will help you choose one that suits your skill level and comfort. You’ll also find:

  • Ammo (target loads)
  • Shell pouches
  • Carts for navigating the course

Should I Book a Lesson?

Absolutely. A lesson with one of our certified instructors will help you feel more confident and safe. They’ll walk you through everything from stance and grip to target tracking and etiquette.

Our instructorsTim, Mike, Ron, and George are known for their calm, helpful teaching style. If you’re looking to learn the basics or fine-tune your aim, they’ve got you covered.

Make It a Family or Team Outing

Sporting clays is a fantastic activity for families, especially with kids out of school during summer break. It encourages focus, patience, and fun away from screens and stress.

Planning a corporate retreat or bachelor party? We also love to see a customized event on our property. We’ve seen:

  • Archery
  • Axe throwing
  • Crossbow challenges
  • Food, drinks, and pavilion rental

All of it happens on-site next to our beginners course, making us one of the most unique event venues in North Georgia.
